A
Amp simulator: A device that emulates the sound of a guitar amplifier. See Devices.
B
Bank: A MIDI bank number (0–127). Each set list maps to one bank. Bank 0 is reserved for factory rigs.
Buffer: A small chunk of audio samples processed at once. See Troubleshooting.
Bypass: Disable a device without removing it from the chain. The device passes audio through unchanged.
C
Cabinet (cab): A device that simulates a guitar speaker cabinet, typically the last stage in an amp-style chain.
Category: A grouping of devices (Drive, Reverb, etc.). See Devices.
Chain: See Signal chain.
Control Mappings: The screen that lists a rig’s Rig Controls, expression pedal mappings, and MIDI mappings in one place. See Rig Controls.
Control source: Anything that drives a parameter: a knob (a Rig Control), the expression pedal, or a MIDI control change.
D
Device: A single audio processor in the signal chain, such as an amp, drive, cab, EQ, modulation, delay, or reverb. See Devices.
Dropout: A click, pop, or brief silence in the audio caused by the audio thread missing its deadline. See Troubleshooting.
E
Encoder: A rotary control on the front panel used to adjust parameters. Axion has 5 encoders.
Enum parameter: A parameter that picks from a fixed list of options (e.g. Symmetrical / Asymmetrical).
F
Factory rig: A rig that ships with Axion, in bank 0. Not editable in place; load and save-as to modify.
Footswitch: A foot-operated switch on the unit, typically used to load rigs, toggle device bypass, or trigger tap tempo. Axion has 5 footswitches.
I
IR (Impulse Response): A short audio recording that captures the acoustic signature of a speaker cabinet, room, or other space. Used by convolution cab devices to model real cabinets.
L
Latency: The time between picking a note and hearing it from the output. See Troubleshooting.
LV2: An open standard for audio plugins on Linux. Axion supports LV2 plugins as third-party devices.
M
Macro: A Rig Control that turns more than one parameter at once. The knob reads 0 to 100 %, and each target keeps its own range and curve. See Rig Controls.
MIDI: Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Used to remotely control Axion, typically with Bank Select to choose a set list and Program Change to choose a rig within it.
P
Parameter: One adjustable value on a device, such as a knob, switch, or selector.
Preset: In some contexts, the same as a rig. The term “rig” is preferred in this manual for the saved sound as a whole; “preset” sometimes refers to a saved parameter snapshot for a single device.
Program Change: A MIDI message (0–127) that selects a rig within the active set list. See Rigs and Set Lists.
R
Real-time: Audio processing that meets a strict per-buffer deadline. See Troubleshooting.
Rig Control: A binding from a dock knob to a device or system parameter, saved with the rig. Assign several parameters to one knob to make a macro. See Rig Controls.
Rig: One complete saved sound: the full chain of devices and all their parameter values. See Rigs and Set Lists.
S
Sample rate: The number of audio samples processed per second. Axion runs at 48 kHz.
Set list: A named, ordered collection of rigs, mapped to a MIDI bank. See Rigs and Set Lists.
Signal chain: The ordered series of devices that audio passes through, from input to output. See The Signal Chain.
V
VST3: A widely-used cross-platform audio plugin format. Axion supports VST3 plugins as third-party devices.
