Overview
Crystal Pistol is a clear, low to medium gain overdrive designed to preserve pick attack and chord detail. It works as a light standalone drive, an always on source of edge, or a boost that adds clipping before an amp without a strong fixed midrange voice.
Drive sets the clipping intensity. Bass is the cutoff of a high pass
filter after clipping, so higher frequency values remove more low end and
tighten the sound. Treble is the cutoff of a low pass filter. Higher values
retain more brightness, while lower values make the drive warmer. Symmetrical
clipping has a balanced, smooth character. Asymmetrical clipping adds a less
even waveform and more harmonic texture.
Tips
- For an open rhythm sound, start with Drive around 25%, Bass near 100 Hz, Treble around 8 kHz, and Symmetrical clipping.
- To tighten a driven amp, keep Drive low and raise the Bass cutoff until palm muted notes stay controlled.
- For a warmer lead, lower the Treble cutoff and try Asymmetrical clipping for added texture.
- Use the lowest Bass cutoff that keeps the rig clear. Excessive bass removal can make solo guitar sound impressive but thin out the full band.
- Compare both Clip Modes at the same loudness. The extra harmonics of Asymmetrical mode can change perceived level.
